Program for 2009

January 30

Concert

“One day in garden of love”

Concert music for block flute in XVII and XVIII  century
(Giovanni Bassano, Jacob van Eyck, Matthew Locke, Henry Purcell,
John Eccles, Gottfried Finger, J.S. Bach)

-Susanne un jour-

Instrumental variations of  renaissance madrigal Roland de Lassus – Diovanni Bassano (1558-1617)

“ One day, in Garden of love, two gentlemen, longing for Suzanne’s love, approach her.
This intrusion in her virtue and innocence saddened her. And she said: “If I consented, unwillingly, to give you the pleasure of my body – I’d lose my soul.
If I baulk at you, you’ll make me die in shame in embarrassment.
But then, I’d rather die pure and innocent than offend The Lord committing a sin”.

Verses of Guilaume Gueroult (1548)

The program is inspired by madrigal Roland de Lassus (based on the story from Old Testament).

In ancient Babel, honest Suzanne is living in a luxurious home with her husband and children. One day, while Suzanne is having a bath in her garden, two rowdy gentlemen are watching her secretly. Overfilled with passion, they are trying to get her to commit adultery with them. But honest Suzanne tells them that she would rather die than commit adultery with them, thus offending The Lord. Infuriated by her denial, they accuse her in front of the judges that they have seen her in adultery with a young boy, in the garden. Upon their accusation Suzanne is sentenced to death. While she is being taken to execution, Holly Ghost shows up to Prophet Daniel and advises him to have them questioned again, but separately this time, since that is the only way to reach the truth. Prophet Daniel carries this out to the judges and he tells them even what question to ask. The question was “Under what kind of tree did you see Suzanne and her lover?” When one pester said “Nut” and the other said “Fir” they knew they were telling lies. Suzanne was set free and the pesters were sentenced and executed…

It’s true that virtue and honesty always win, isn’t it?

Participants:

Karolina Bäter (Netherlands) – block flute
Zoran Kostadinović – baroque violin
Andrej Jovanić – theorbo
